Over 100 years ago in a high,remote landscape of striking and serene beauty, Chokyi doriee (Longchenpa) built Tra Ling Monastery. Being one of the important sources for the Early Tradition (Nyingma) and teachings on the Great Secret Mantra,many came form far and wide to circumambulate the monastery. However, tragedy struck during the Cultural Revolution However tragedy struck during the cultural revolution decimating the monastery decimdecimating the monastery. Then, due to the efforts of Danpe Nyinma Rinpoche and Pema Lodro, the monastery was rebuilt in the `70s for purposes of Dharma study, three-year retreats, and hosting great Puja events. Today, Tra Ling houses anywhere between 300 to 1000 monks. In addition,it has established more than 10 satellite monasteries. One can also find 30 retreat cabins, scattered over the mountain, a three-year retreat center, a special facility, nearby, for nuns, yogis, and older lamas,and a famous sky burial ground.
